Task 5 has two preparation stages: 60 seconds to choose an option (no recording), then 60 seconds to prepare your comparison and 60 seconds to speak.
Speaking lasts about 15 minutes overall. There is no prescribed word count; organize enough relevant detail to use the speaking time naturally.

Use your preparation time
In the first 60-second stage, compare your two options and choose one. In the second 60-second stage, compare that choice with the alternative shown and prepare reasons that matter to the listener.
Manage your speaking time
Use the 60-second response to recommend your option, compare two relevant criteria and close with why your choice is the better fit. Keep the recommendation consistent.
Response plans are MockPip suggestions; follow the official preparation and recording timers.
A technique for this task
Make paired comparisons: show how both options perform on the same criterion instead of describing them in unrelated lists. Acknowledge a drawback, then explain why it is manageable.
Try an original practice scenario
Practice scenario: A friend can join a small evening class nearby or a cheaper online course. Recommend one option.
This example is independently written for practice; it is not a question from an official exam.
Plan a clear response
- Choose the option you will recommend.
- Compare two relevant factors, such as cost, schedule or support.
- Acknowledge a drawback and explain why your choice still fits.
Example of a useful opening
I would choose the evening class. It costs more, but you told me you learn best when you can ask questions immediately, and the short trip makes it easy to attend regularly.
Use this as a model of structure. In your own attempt, respond naturally to the prompt you receive.
A common mistake
Describing both choices without a firm recommendation weakens the persuasive part.
Check your recording
Did you compare the choices and speak to the other person's priorities? Play your response back, choose one thing to improve, and record another attempt. If feedback is available for your attempt, use it alongside what you hear yourself.
Your next timed exercise
Record two attempts with opposite choices. For each, check that your comparisons use the actual details shown and address the other person’s priorities.
Check whether your answer completes the role, uses specific supporting details and ends before the recording timer expires.
