- 1 recorded task
Preparation and speaking have separate timers. Read the role and task carefully, then finish your response within the recording time.
Speaking lasts about 15 minutes overall. There is no prescribed word count; organize enough relevant detail to use the speaking time naturally.

Use your preparation time
Use the 60 seconds to choose whom you will address, decide the message you need to deliver and prepare a realistic alternative. Check both options in the prompt before choosing.
Manage your speaking time
Suggested 60-second plan: acknowledge the difficulty, explain the necessary decision briefly, offer an alternative and close respectfully.
Response plans are MockPip suggestions; follow the official preparation and recording timers.
A technique for this task
Use a firm but considerate tone. A helpful solution is more effective than a long apology that never explains what will happen.
Try an original practice scenario
Practice scenario: You promised to help a neighbour move, but an unavoidable appointment has been scheduled at the same time. Explain the problem.
This example is independently written for practice; it is not a question from an official exam.
Plan a clear response
- State the issue promptly and acknowledge its effect on the other person.
- Explain only the context needed to understand the change.
- Offer a specific alternative and ask whether it works.
Example of a useful opening
I'm sorry, but I have an appointment at the time we planned to move your boxes. I can come that evening for two hours or help first thing Sunday. Would either option work for you?
Use this as a model of structure. In your own attempt, respond naturally to the prompt you receive.
A common mistake
A long excuse without a workable solution leaves the difficult situation unresolved.
Check your recording
Would the other person understand the issue and know exactly what you can offer? Play your response back, choose one thing to improve, and record another attempt. If feedback is available for your attempt, use it alongside what you hear yourself.
Your next timed exercise
Play the response back from the recipient’s perspective. Can they tell what you decided and what practical option they have next?
Check whether your answer completes the role, uses specific supporting details and ends before the recording timer expires.
