- 1 recorded task
Preparation and speaking have separate timers. Read the role and task carefully, then finish your response within the recording time.
Speaking lasts about 15 minutes overall. There is no prescribed word count; organize enough relevant detail to use the speaking time naturally.

Use your preparation time
Use the 30 seconds to identify the familiar object or setting, the unusual feature and a comparison that makes its appearance easy to imagine.
Manage your speaking time
Use the 60 seconds as a conversation with someone who cannot see the scene. Establish the context, describe distinctive details and complete any request in the prompt.
Response plans are MockPip suggestions; follow the official preparation and recording timers.
A technique for this task
If a specific noun is unfamiliar, describe its shape, material, function or location with words you know. Do not stop the response to search for one perfect word.
Try an original practice scenario
Practice focus: Imagine explaining a bicycle with an unexpectedly large basket shaped like a flower to someone on the phone.
This example is independently written for practice; it is not a question from an official exam.
Plan a clear response
- Identify the familiar object or setting first.
- Explain what is unusual using shape, size, colour or position.
- Add a comparison to an everyday object if it makes your description clearer.
Example of a useful opening
It's an ordinary bicycle except for the basket on the front. The basket opens outward like a large flower, with curved sections around the edge instead of straight sides.
Use this as a model of structure. In your own attempt, respond naturally to the prompt you receive.
A common mistake
Calling something strange without explaining what it looks like gives the listener little to imagine.
Check your recording
Could a listener identify the familiar object and the unusual feature? Play your response back, choose one thing to improve, and record another attempt. If feedback is available for your attempt, use it alongside what you hear yourself.
Your next timed exercise
Hide the image and ask whether your recording explains what is unusual. Add a useful comparison and remove any detail that does not help the listener picture it.
Check whether your answer completes the role, uses specific supporting details and ends before the recording timer expires.
