Preparation and speaking have separate timers. Read the role and task carefully, then finish your response within the recording time.

Speaking lasts about 15 minutes overall. There is no prescribed word count; organize enough relevant detail to use the speaking time naturally.

Use your preparation time

Scan the whole image first, then choose three areas to describe in a sensible order. Note people, positions and visible actions.

Manage your speaking time

Use the 60 seconds for an overview and a guided description. Move from foreground to background or left to right, rather than jumping randomly between objects.

Response plans are MockPip suggestions; follow the official preparation and recording timers.

A technique for this task

Use present continuous for actions and precise spatial phrases to connect people and objects. Explain important details before small decorative ones.

Try an original practice scenario

Practice focus: In a picture with several people, describe the overall location first, then the most important actions and positions.

This example is independently written for practice; it is not a question from an official exam.

Plan a clear response

  1. Identify the setting and the main activity.
  2. Move through the image in a clear order, such as foreground to background.
  3. Describe visible details; use cautious language for anything you infer.

Example of a useful opening

This looks like a busy community garden. In the foreground, two people are planting seedlings, while others are carrying watering cans near the back fence.

Use this as a model of structure. In your own attempt, respond naturally to the prompt you receive.

A common mistake

Inventing a detailed story about the people can crowd out what is actually visible.

Check your recording

Could someone sketch the main objects and their positions from your description? Play your response back, choose one thing to improve, and record another attempt. If feedback is available for your attempt, use it alongside what you hear yourself.

Your next timed exercise

Ask someone to sketch a rough layout from your recording. Check whether the main people and objects are in the right positions.

Check whether your answer completes the role, uses specific supporting details and ends before the recording timer expires.
